Editor’s Note: The “Why we give” series features Kids Exchange who are actively donating a portion of their monthly credit card transaction fees to a special charity or charities of their choice.
Raising kids is expensive and parents who find they have a house overflowing with clothes and toys their children have outgrown can give this stuff new life and make a little money by reselling it through Kids Exchange International.
Kids Exchange is a bi-yearly consignment sale event that sells gently used children’s items from early childhood up to the teenage years. Parents drop off unwanted tagged items and Kids Exchange sells the items and sends the seller a check.
“The sale brings a lot of excitement, and we have more than 30,000 people involved in the Raleigh, N.C. area — it’s the largest consignment event in the nation,” says Amy Winstead owner of Kids Exchange International.
If items don’t sell, parents can put a white tag on them, which means they will be automatically donated to children in need or unsold items can be picked up at the end of the week.
“Things left and donated by Kids Exchange parents are sent all over the world to places, such as Haiti and the Amish communities of Pennsylvania,” says Winstead. “We’ve given away more than $10 million worth of items over the last 15 years to various organizations.”

The consignment events have been going strong for 20 years, and Kids Exchange started franchising four years ago, which has resulted in 10 franchises around the country.
“We have hundreds of thousands of dollars that come through during a four-day-period — we have to get it right,” says Winstead.
“Merchant Match Charity is just as fast and easy to use as square,” she says. “We switched because a portion of what the processor makes goes to a charity we care about. By partnering with Merchant Match Charity our fees are going to support the Iron Academy of Raleigh, N.C.”
